3 Reasons To Compost With Coffee

Cafe_D_3 Reasons To Compost With Coffee

Just when you thought that coffee was perfect simply by virtue of its presence in your morning mug, we come along and tell you about all the other ways coffee is useful in everyday life. From skincare to garden support, coffee’s brilliance can be utilized well outside the kitchen. As we approach spring (far sooner than usual) we thought it prudent to share three reasons you should absolutely be composting with coffee grounds. Now, let’s get those garden beds ready for success with our good pal coffee!

Nitrogen is critical for a plant’s developmental process, and coffee has plenty to spare. Coffee grounds can provide the necessary nitrogen for chlorophyll production, resulting in big, strong plants.

Insect Repellant

Countless studies have shown coffee grounds to be effective in protecting your garden from the most notoriously destructive pets; slugs and snails. Save your saucers of beer, your circles of salt and your caustic repellents in favor of your daily used coffee grounds and effectively repel pests while you fertilize.

Acid Neutralizer

A healthy soil PH is vital to a healthy garden.  Typically, the acidity of your soil should be close to neutral (toward acidic end of the scale) Coffee grounds are a neutral fertilizer; acids in the beans are water-soluble and are washed away during brewing.

America’s Favorite Coffee Drinks Right Now

3 International Coffee Drinks Every Coffee Lover Needs To Try

It seems like there’s always some new coffee creation or discovery or trend taking over our social media feeds. There’s eternally something delicious just waiting for you to discover it, but why wait? Here are three fads captivating coffee connoisseurs throughout the Northwest—jump on these trends, snap a pic, and be your social circle’s #coffeetrendsetter.

International Brews

A chocolate Caffè Marocchino a la Italia, or a frothy Cortado a la Espana—these are pretty common coffeehouse drinks in their regions but are lesser known stateside. Jump in front of this trend by sampling a few more international variations of espresso.

Bitter Brews

While sweet coffee concoctions have held the public’s attention for some time, a slow shift back to the essential aromas, flavors, and nuances of skillfully roasted whole bean coffee is on the horizon. If your taste buds are begging for a break from overly sweet, candy comparable beverages, ease into this trend with a mild Americano.

Buzzed Brews

It’s official, the west coast is cannabis central, so expect to see a lot of THC- and CBD-infused roasted coffee beans, ready-made coffee drinks, and coffee flavored edible treats.

Forecasting 2018s Hot Coffee Trends

Cafe_D_Forecasting 2018s Hot Coffee Trends

There were some truly memorable coffee trends of 2017, and we expect more in the coming months. But what, you may be asking, can we expect specifically? Well, there’s no concrete answer, just speculation—which we’ve been doing plenty of. That said, here’s our forecast for 2018s hottest coffee trends.

More Experimental Fraps

Once summer arrives, the coffee consuming public becomes rabid for frosty blended coffee drinks to cool their overheated bodies. While we wholeheartedly endorse a well-made, ice blended coffee drink, we expect that last year’s maniacal Unicorn Frap trend will inspire more coffee aberrations to be consumed solely for social media views, on which our position is neutral at best.

More International Favorites

With the sudden popularity of the Flat White, a super-common Australian coffeehouse drink, we expect an rise in popularity for more international coffee classics heretofore unrecognized in the states.

More Interesting Roasts

As more and more small-batch coffee roasters find their legs, many of us are being introduced to small roasts we may not have enjoyed otherwise. We predict that small batch roasters will continue to grow into an even more robust craft industry, possibly even competing with beer for Oregon’s #1 craft beverage.

How Decaf Is Made

Cafe_D_How Decaf Is Made-1

There are some among us that, even though they adore the taste and smell of coffee, can’t stomach the caffeine. For those, the subject of decaf coffee is perfectly acceptable. One may wonder how it is that coffee beans are stripped of their natural caffeine and if that process somehow affects the quality of the coffee.  Decaf coffee is notoriously hard to roast, and as such, there is a noticeable difference in the flavor of decaf. The natural caffeine found in coffee beans contributes to the beans overall flavor; removing it naturally alters the flavor.

The original method for coffee decaffeination required soaking green coffee beans 160-210-degree water. A solvent or activated carbon was then used to extract/dissolve the caffeine. This is when the beans would lose some of their unique flavors, but once the dissolving liquid was drained the remaining batches tended to hold onto their singular flavors. In more recently developed methods, coffee beans from the first batch are be re-soaked in the water solution to reabsorb some of the flavor compounds lost during the decaffeination process.

While decaf coffee typically lacks the robust flavors of traditional coffee, there are several flavored roasts that serve to enhance the decaffeinated bean’s true flavor.

2017’s Best Moments in Coffee

Cafe_D_2017s Best Moments in Coffee

This year, like most years throughout recorded history, has meant a lot of different things to a lot of different people, and while we know our own experiences inform how we perceive the world around us and how we do (or do not) interact with our fellow human beings, we also know there is one inescapable element that unites us—and that element is coffee. Coffee brought us together for some of the most memorable moments of the last year—let’s look back at these moments together and remember that regardless of the state of the world in 2017, coffee was always, really, truly, there for us.

Starbucks Premiers The Unicorn Frappuccino

In what was one of the most internet-hyped food releases of the year, this purple/blue/turquoise/pink sugar bomb dominated most of our social media feeds for at least a week (which is an eternity in internet time). The meme peaked with a gif of pop star Katy Perry sipping and immediately spitting out the multicolored slush after looking into a camera and saying, “It’s like taking a sip of myself.”

Agent Cooper Returns, For Coffee

Twin Peaks fans rejoiced (or grimaced-depending on the fan) with the news that the long-loved, sleeper soap opera would be resurrected for short run on cable television. Sure enough, 90s kids from coast to coast squealed when Agent Cooper once again crossed the threshold of the Double R for “cherry pie and damn good coffee.”

The Oregon Trail Gets A Hipster Makeover (from FoodandWine.com)

“… Travel Oregon recently unveiled an ultra-modern version of everyone’s favorite old-school computer game, The Oregon Trail. …(T)he web title features artisanal coffee, craft beer, and kombucha alongside a rotating cast of yoga teachers, Willamette Valley winemakers, and heritage apple farmers.”

3 More DIY Coffee Cosmetics

Cafe_D_3 Ways To Use Coffee As A Cosmetic

Coffee is more than just a delicious, globally revered beverage. It is also a bit of a wonder product when it comes to health and beauty. Coffee grounds can be reused and incorporated into your beauty routine in innumerable ways, but these three are definitely among our favorites.

Puffy Eye Treatment

Use a bit of your morning coffee grounds the same way you may use cucumbers; place over your eyes while relaxing in a warm bath before rinsing thoroughly with cool water. The caffeine will lift and tighten the skin around your eyes as well as stimulate collagen production and blood flow.

Self-Tanning and Exfoliating

Blend used coffee grounds with your favorite body lotion and just a hint of gentle body wash/liquid soap for an all over skin treatment that will leave you bronzed and luminous. Use this treatment while you shower and remember to place a debris catcher in your drain lest you clog your pipes with coffee grounds and lotion.

Scalp Stimulator

Winter months can be particularly brutal on dry skin, especially dry scalps. Counteract this atmospheric dryness by very gently scrubbing your scalp every other week with a combo of used coffee grounds and your favorite gentle shampoo. The caffeine will stimulate your hair follicles while increased blood flow will make for a supple scalp and an enviable head of hair.
